| 20 | XXL | 24 | 52 | 38 | 48 | 97 | 122 |
These are typical reference measurements; brands differ by up to an inch or two, so use each brand’s own chart when it’s available. UK sizes are usually the US size plus four, and EU sizes the US size plus 32 in many brands.
How to measure yourself
- Natural waist: the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight.
- Hips: the fullest part of your hips and bottom, feet together.
- Where the skirt will sit: many skirts sit lower than the natural waist, so measure there too.
- Length: from where the waistband will sit down to where you want the hem — knee, mid-calf or ankle.
- Compare with the chart: for fitted skirts, choose the size that fits your larger measurement and tailor the other.
Skirt lengths
| Length | Hem falls | Typical length from waist |
|---|---|---|
| Micro-mini | Upper thigh | about 13–14 in (33–36 cm) |
| Mini | Mid-thigh | about 15–18 in (38–46 cm) |
| Above the knee | 2–4 in above the knee | about 18–21 in (46–53 cm) |
| Knee length | At the knee | about 21–24 in (53–61 cm) |
| Midi | Mid-calf | about 27–32 in (69–81 cm) |
| Tea length | Lower calf | about 32–35 in (81–89 cm) |
| Maxi | Ankle | about 37–42 in (94–107 cm) |
| Floor length | Floor | about 40–44 in (102–112 cm) |
Lengths depend on your height and where the waistband sits: a “knee-length” skirt on a petite frame may reach mid-calf. Measure from your own waist to the point you want and compare with the product’s stated length.
Fit by skirt style
| Style | Key measurement | Fit tip |
|---|---|---|
| Pencil | Hips and waist | Choose by hips; tailor the waist |
| A-line | Waist | Hips have ease built in |
| Circle / skater | Waist | Hips don’t matter; check length |
| Wrap | Waist | Adjustable; check the overlap |
| Pleated | Waist | Pleats should lie flat at the hip |
| Elastic waist | Waist range | Check the stretched and relaxed measurements |
| Bias-cut slip | Hips | Drapes close to the body |
Worked example
Your natural waist measures 29 inches and your hips 40 inches. On the chart, a 29-inch waist suggests a US 10 and a 40-inch hip falls between 10 and 12. For an A-line or circle skirt, choose the US 10 (UK 14, EU 42) — the skirt’s shape gives room at the hips. For a pencil skirt, choose the US 12 (UK 16, EU 44) so it fits across the hips, and have the waist taken in if it gaps.
Measuring a skirt that fits
- Lay the skirt flat and fasten it.
- Measure straight across the waistband and double it for the waist.
- Measure across at the hip point (about 7–8 inches below the waistband) and double it.
- Measure the length from the top of the waistband to the hem at the centre front or back.
- Use these garment measurements to compare with online listings.
Petite, tall and plus sizes
Petite ranges (usually for heights under about 5 ft 4 in or 163 cm) shorten skirt lengths and sometimes the rise; tall ranges lengthen them. Plus sizes typically start around US 14–16 and may be labelled 1X, 2X, 3X or with numeric sizes like 18W, 20W. Plus charts often grade the hip more generously relative to the waist. Always check the specific brand’s chart for these ranges.
